Dell bios gpo
Updating the BIOS on multiple laptops and desktops can be a tiresome task that may just seem easier to do without. However, securing the BIOS can prevent attackers from overwriting or tampering with the OS and ensures your data stays safe. Please note that this guide only applies to Dell systems. All systems were running Windows 7 Professional x64 and Windows 10 Pro x First, download the latest BIOS revisions for each of the models deployed throughout your organization from Dell's support website.
Create a new folder in which you will place the downloaded revisions. For this guide, I will be saving all necessary files to the following location:. I have created separate folders for each model. If you download multiple revisions for one model, I suggest you come up with a naming convention so you don't have multiple separate directories to hold one revision.
For this guide, I will be using the following naming convention:. Although you can configure separate packages for each model in your organization, I recommend creating a multiplatform package that will work with all models. I have never had any issues creating a multiplatform package that works with different Dell models, even those manufactured as late as With that in mind, select the Create Multiplatform Package tab and configure the package options. When you are satisfied with your configuration, export your package as a.
For this guide, I will be saving my configuration to the following location:. You will be importing the directory to which you copy these files as a package in SCCM.
For this guide, I will be copying these files to the following location:.

Now we are ready to create the task sequence that will push the BIOS configuration. The toolkit will deploy this task sequence as a required advertisement and will also flash any BIOS updates needed using the revisions you downloaded earlier. Expand the Application Management node and click on the Packages applet. Create a new package using the Dell CCTK folder you just created, but do not create a program or add any requirements.
When you are finished creating the package, distribute it to the necessary distribution points. But I would prefer not to have to drive out to all of them.
Anyone know of an easy way to do this. I think, regardless of the answers you get, you'll find that they're pretty much equal when it comes down to it. Most people are going to go from their personal experience with the CSRs and the machines themselves. I've had great luck with Dell over the last 7 years in this shop.
They both seem sub-par to me but Dell is what we use, none-the-less. Have you tried OpenManage? I havent used it extensively but it can do some freaky things in dell computers. Nice one JacobP you beat me to it Also, if you know the characteristic "number for what you want to change, perhaps it can be done through WMIC It looks like it can but I'm not about to try it for a couple helpful post points.
Logmein Free allows you to get to the bios of a remote computer? Not trying to call you out, but if it really does this, I'd like to know. If you have any software deployment solution in place, you can deploy the exe to the machines in your normal patch cycle and the BIOS exe will reboot the computer and install automatically. I put together a guide on using it:. This tool is awesome because you can now change the boot order remotely! Meaning you can remote PXE boot machines!!
I may have not read through it closely enough, but I don't see anywhere that you talk about the syntax for actually making these changes on a remote computer. Although I am generally opposed to reviving a dead post, I feel that this answer didn't get the recognition it deserved. It doesn't require a server beyond a DC, which you already have if you are trying to do this.
Besides, based on what I've read it seems like you still have to use CCTK with those other options, they just provide a means of deploying your package other than GPO. JosephMoody - Awesome walkthrough and an amazing site. I have already started using your multiple remote desktop trick and am looking into last logged on user.Weak auras custom sort
Looks like I was just impatient. Very nice to have this all nicely spelled out on Joseph's website. Thanks all - just what I was looking for. I only have a handful 20 of Dell Latitude laptops in a small domain, but even keep on top of these individually is a nightmare. Now, if only there was a simple and free way that I can mange the Dell Data Protection Access software - I would be landed.
I just installed the Dell Client Configuration Toolkit on one of my workstations and used it to create and exe of the BIOS settings I wanted to use on my workstations. I am so excited because I have been putting off manually making these changes to each machine and I used these tools to change every workstation in less than 1 hour.Rishta for widow
Just to throw my own experience into the mix here I was looking for a way to do this because I have a number of different models of Dell Optiplex machines running a multitude of different BIOS versions depending on when we purchased them, and wanted to get each model on the same BIOS version. We currently don't have SCCM or another way to implement this.
I'm trying to get our labs and podium computers ready for Wake-On-LAN, and figured it was time to get everything current and all to the same revisions.
We are working on a SCCM implementation too - but we just aren't at a good production stage where I can utilize it yet, so this was the best alternativeHow do you manage the BIOS settings on your computers? When I asked this question to a few friends, the response was the sound of crickets.
One in our group spoke up. He walks around and manually configures them! While he is obviously in better shape than I am, I chose to blame genetics and not the fact that I would rather automate a task than physically do it. To manage your Dell machines and to automate some workyou can choose one of two routes to manage the Dell BIOS remotely.
Setting a BIOS password should be a priority. Configuring Wake on LAN is another option that should be universally configured. Configuring boot options means only allowing approved devices to be booted from. In our environment, you can only boot off of the hard drive or the NIC. This keeps users from booting to a OS on a thumb drive or using a password cracker CD against our administrative accounts.
Finally, configuring your computers to automatically power on before the day starts will cut down on your workload. Any Windows Update or software that you deploy will already be installed before the user even arrives at work. As a warning, y0ur users will forget how to turn on their computers… seriously…. It is a free tool that is also Windows PE compatible!
The tool comes in a GUI and in a command line format. We are going to cover both methods, starting with the command line first so go ahead and install CCTK. After installation, browse to CCTK. Right click and start an Administrative Command Prompt in this folder. Type cctk. You should see:. From here, you can see that configuring specific BIOS settings is actually quite easy.
To show you some examples, here is how you could configure our four recommended BIOS settings from above:. Two things to note.
First, each parameter has a double dash — preceding it. The next two options require a bit more to configure. Here is how to manage them:. These three commands configured the BIOS to automatically turn on every weekday at AM — meaning that your computers are always ready for your users!
If you have any questions or anything that you want me to cover specifically, just let me know in the comments! Thanks for the write-up.A decade ago, I naively sought to simplify my whole environment.
I would deploy and manage just a single browser.
Originally, I tried this with Internet Explorer — later with Chrome. Both had a fairly rich set of management features and could be tweaked to make problematic websites work with them. I never quite got down to a single browser environment and I doubt I ever will. We would have some critical website that was only supported with another browser.
We would have exceptions and then exceptions to those exceptions. When it comes to managing and securing your browsers, you have two paths. You can try and use the vendor supplied tools.
A lot of your work will be duplicated as you manage three or four browsers separately. In this review, we will look at the compliance, policy settings, and additional features that Browser Security Plus brings to your environment. Browser Security Plus is an on-premise solution that utilizes a client agent to report on, enforce, and enhance the security of the four most popular web browsers Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer, and Mozilla Firefox.
It is designed only for Windows. The agent, deployable through SCCM or Group Policy, regularly reviews browser configurations and reports on the status for each user. I always hated how a certain setting would only be available for users in Group Policy. Because the Browser Security Plus agent is always running, it is able to gather and report on the configuration and compliance for each user on a machine.
This data is quickly summarized on the Home Screen as a series of dashboards. Data, such as Default Browser Distribution and Recently Accessed Plugins, allow you to see how your users actually work. You might find out that a managed browser could be removed because few users use it or that a deployed plugin is never accessed. Detailed and customized reporting can be found in the Compliance section.
Выключение, спящий режим, гибернация или изменение схемы управления питанием в Windows 10
Example reports include machines at risk for phishing, machines with malicious plugins, and machines with exposed cloud services. All reports can be filtered by the computers affected or by the specific configurations that are missing.
The Manage, Policies, and Insights sections allow you to deploy your configurations and to see how your environment stacks up. Computers will appear in the Manage tab as you install or deploy the agent. From here, you can group devices together to make configuration a bit easier. In the future, it would be great to see some groups be created automatically — either through a sync to Active Directory or by looking at attributes of clients.
Policies is where you will find the meat of this product — 9 different categories to beef up the security of your browsers 1. Unlike those previous tools, you only need to do your configuration once for it to apply across your browsers.
If you wanted, you could even replace the generic Group Policy settings such as homepage settings with the Browser Customization node.Bios is the Basic Input Output System. Basically it is the firmware or software that is embedded on the motherboard of your computer. The BIOS stores the information about your boot devices, boot sequence whether you are booting from the harddrive, network or flash drive. Why dou need to update your BIOS?
Unlike other software the BIOS update is not automatic. You have to update it manually. You first need to check which version of the BIOS your computer is running, in that way you can see if there is a newer version available for your model. If you are using windows 10, you can easily get the BIOS version.
Type msinfo32 in search then the enter or return key. Windows will bring up the system information and your BIOS information and version will be shown as on the screen shot below. If you are using windows 8 or 8. Alternatively press the windows key on your keyboard and R you should get the run box. Then type msinfo32 and press the return or enter key and the system information window will pop up. This will also work on any windows computer. The next thing you will need to update the BIOS is download the firmware.
You will download from the dell website. I recommend downloading from the manufacturers website which is the safe way. If you have battery issues check the the how to update BIOS without battery section towards the end of the article. Now that we have the firmware the rest is easy. Double click the executable file. It will open a window with details about the new BIOS firmware you downloaded. NB Note the exact name of the exe file before you shut down the machine in the following steps as you will need it later on in the process.
If you are using Ubuntu For Ubuntu systems before Now download and copy the executable BIOS file from Dell in the same steps mentioned above for the windows system. Now reboot the computer and interrupt the boot process by selecting F12 and navigation to the USB flash.
This method works on Dell computers which had Linux preinstalled for example the XPS 13 linux version. As already mentioned in order to update BIOS the system forces you to have the battery charged and adapter connected. But you can override this if you have battery issues or problems with the adapter. Please make sure you have a sufficient and reliable supply of power from either your laptop battery or from the adapter.
This is important because if the computer loses power in the middle of an BIOS update it can spell doom to your computer or cause you more issues. To override the adapter and battery requirement and update BIOS without battery or power connected you. If you encounter problems with either Windows, BIOS or Hard drive passwords when updating passwords here is how to solve them.
In that case you will need to contact dell to get the Master Password. Then you can clear the password. When contacting Dell, you will need to provide proof of ownership of the computer. Have your service tag ready as you will be asked for it. The Master passwords are case sensitive so when you get the master password check you caps lock if you get the password invalid message.
